Who I Am…
Hello… I’m Christine…a wife, mother of two sons and an almost empty-nester! I live with my husband Matthew, and our grown son David, The Lawyer. My other son, Michael, is a Chemical Engineer and lives with his gorgeous wife Allison, who is an RN. Do I sound like a proud mother? This blog is for all real cooks …ones who want to prepare lovely food but also sometimes drop food on the floor, swipe bowls with their fingers and lick butter wrappers…like me!
I come from a large family where everyone loved to eat…but not cook, except me (the strange one!) As an Army Brat, I lived all over the world, but mostly in Europe. In the 4th grade I checked my first cookbook out of the American school library, followed the recipe for Deviled Eggs…(always wondered what those were!!) and was hooked! My mom encouraged me (she really hated to cook) and gave me free reign to make and bake, as long as I “didn’t burn the house down”.
Years later when I got married, our budget was so tight creating thrifty meals became an obsession. After more than 20 years, calculating the cost per portion of every meal (in my head), using coupons and creating menus from what’s on sale is still a habit. So basically every recipe you will see on this blog is made from simple ingredients (probably on sale or in the reduced bin) and most can be made in less than an hour.
After raising my boys and working more than 20 years in the mortgage industry, the recession hit and not only was my position gone, but basically the whole industry I worked in. Out of work (and with few prospects) I started this blog in 2014 not only to write about my interests but to add some structure back into my life. What started as a lifestyle blog (I had a lifestyle?) has evolved to a blog almost exclusively about food.
To my surprise, I absolutely love sharing recipes, photos and stories with you. I hope you enjoy what you find here…original recipes, adapted recipes from my hundred of cookbooks and magazines (another obsession), and recipes from Pinterest. If you like linky parties, the Wonderful Wednesday Link Party is co-hosted on the blog each week and you are invited! There will also be a few ads, affiliate links and the occasional sponsored post that support my blog and keep The Handyman quiet.
Thanks so much for visiting!
